The Key to Organizing a Kid's Room

I truly enjoyed this unique opportunity working with an 8 year old girl who wanted me to "transform" her room for my Everyday Simplicity Program. She wanted to see a difference in how her room could look like because she felt she "needed a new look." With an attitude like that, I knew half the battle was won! Another helpful key was involving her in the organization process.

I decided to play a game with her and ask her how many piles of related items she could build: hair accessories, toiletries, jewelry pieces; clothes, paper & pens, stuffed animals, toys, etc... After she accomplished that, I asked her to go through each pile and look for all the items she truly loved and needed. On the flip side, she realized there were items she no longer wanted. So we began a new game: building the "trash bin." She liked that game and before I knew it, it was filled to the rim.
First, we sorted and analyzed what she truly loved and wanted to keep.
Second, we made "homes" for each piles.
Third, we tossed everything that was no longer useful or needed.

I liked what she said, "Similar items need to live with each other so they won't be get lost, and I get to build little villages for where they can live." That's the idea! I told her. And without spending extra money on storage bins, we used items that she already had in her room that she didn't think she could use e.g. decorative boxes and tin cans. "This can be where your pens can live." She liked putting them in a plastic bucket that had a handle on it for easy carrying. Interestingly enough, she enjoyed organizing and thought it was fun. By the end of the process, she couldn't wait to show her room to her mom!

From the mouths of babes - building little villages for similar items. She is an organizer in the making. Love this game approach to teaching her such valuable skills at a young age. Wonderful!
